The area I was collecting was a dipterocarp forest. The traps were yellow rim bowls approximately 15cm in diameter and about 3 cm deep . I made a bit of a depression in the grass or hole in the ground and placed the bowl in it. Put water and a bit of Extran (a liquid soap concentrate) in the bowl. It worked fine.
Two main problems I ran into: locals taking the pretty bowls, intense rain episodes washing out the bowls and sometimes totally flooding the areas. I tried to place the bowls in sheltered areas but this wasn't always possible. I checked the bowls daily or every other day. This was labour intensive but necessary. I could never have left those bowls for weeks let alone months!! I hope this helps!
